I really love the STUST campus, but there is one thing the bothers me a bit. Such as the JKU, it is far away from city centre or anything interesting. I envied the campus of the National Cheng Kung University a bit, which is located in the heart of Tainan. Three big shopping malls, the main train station und thousands of streets with food and curiosities from Taiwan are 5 minutes by foot from the NCKU-University. Located somewhere in the north of Tainan, in the district YongKang, the neighbourhood of the STUST campus, my home, is far away from all the stress of the inner city, yet provides everything I need to enjoy life – and more!

Nantai Street

There is a special relation between the city and this street. It not only provides notoriously good and diverse food – for that Tainan is famous for in Taiwan – but also the Chinese characters are the same for the city TaiNan and the NanTai street, just switched. The time I am here, I also established a special relationship to this street. First, it provides food – so far so good! The diversity might seem small, but if you could read Chinese characters – or just ask for the English menu – you could experience a memorable journey of your taste buds. The places I visit the most for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner time – and midnight snacks, and after-party food – are the Triangle store, Beef-Soup-Store, Yoyo, Fried-Place, Corner-Store, Purple-Store, Turkey-Place, Hot-Plate-Place, Italian-Store, BBQ-Place, Dumpling-Place, Seaweed-Rolls and Soup-Place – the real names are too hard to remember, or I am too lazy. Here, I find myself eating one of these.

Nantai Street, however, provides another jewellery of my time here in Tainan. The nearest Family Mart is our favourite place to hang out during the late evening, to have a beer, eat our food packages there or “party” until early in the morning. We do crazy stuff in there and the stuff is already like family – more the great-great-cousins to whom you never talk. All of the time we spend there it seems we are the interior of the convenience store, or at least try hard to replace them – speaking of a certain table.

Zhonghua Road

The next biggest street in the surrounding of the STUST is also the most crowded, when it comes to traffic. Here, cars and scooters are led over Daqiao, the big bridge, which serves as a viaduct over the equally named train station. With the train, it is just one stop á la three minutes to the city centre. Crossing Daqiao southwards, you will reach a lively Zhonghua Road with shops, banks, supermarkets and restaurants, such as T13 or Feed Me.

Going northwards from Daqiao, you will reach the Chimei-Hospital, where I haven’t been – yet, three knocks on wood – and other shops for your physical and psychological health. Turning right, the road will take you to car-retailers and more industrial sites. Bigger markets such as Carrefour are also located in this area. Too far to go by foot, the Zhonghua Road provides the closest Mc Donald’s, KFC and Starbucks to the university.

The street in front of the north entrance provides food stalls, but not as much as in Nantai Street. The Vietnamese restaurants there are awesome. Still the most impressive thing there is the Daoist Temple.

All I was talking about was where to eat and to drink, but did you know that studying requires courses here at STUST? The next part will introduce my courses I have – or decided – to attend and the overview of my master thesis topic.

Obwohl ich den Campus der STUST liebe, hat er einen Nachteil mit dem Campus der JKU gemeinsam. Beide sind ein ganzes Stück von der Innenstadt entfernt. Manchmal beneide ich die Studenten der National Cheng Kung University um ihren Campus, der sich direkt im Zentrum von Tainan befindet. Gleich nebenbei befinden sich drei große Einkaufszentren, der Hauptbahnhof und unzählige kleine Shops. Im YongKang Distrikt, der sich im Norden von Tainan befindet, befindet sich der Campus der STUST, meinem Zuhause auf Zeit. Fern ab von all dem Stress und Trubel der Innenstadt, bietet die Umgebung dennoch alles, was ich zum Leben und Überleben brauche.

Nantai Street

Die spezielle Beziehung zwischen der Stadt und der Nantai Street, basiert nicht nur auf ihrem reichhaltigen Essensangebot, für welches Tainan in ganz Taiwan bekannt ist, sondern auch ihre Namensgleichheit – NanTai Street und TaiNan. Auch ich habe während meines Aufenthaltes in Tainan eine besondere Beziehung zur Nantai Street aufgebaut. Wenn man in der Lage ist chinesische Schriftzeichen zu lesen, oder einfach nach der englischen Karte fragt, kann man eine Variation an Köstlichkeiten entdecken. Meine beliebtesten Restaurants, die ich für Frühstück, Mittagessen und/oder Abendessen – und Mitternachtssnacks, und After-Party Snacks – aufsuche, sind der Triangle store, der Beef-Soup-Store, Yoyo, Fried-Place, der Corner Store, der Purple Store, Turkey-Place, Hot-Plate-Place, Italian-Store, BBQ-Place, Dumpling-Place, Seaweed Rolls und der Soup-Place.

Nantai Street bietet einen weiteren Ort, in dem wir uns abends öfters wiederfinden. Der nahegelegenste Family Mart ist unser Lieblingsort um am Abend ein Bier zu trinken, unser Essen dorthin mitzunehmen oder einfach bis früh morgens zu feiern. Wir sind so oft dort, dass wir quasi zum Inventar gehören und versuchen es zu ersetzen, insbesondere einen bestimmten Tisch.

Zhonghua Road

Die zweitgrößte Straße in der Umgebung der STUST ist auch die mit dem meisten Verkehr. Sie führt die Autos und Scooter über Daqiao, ein Viadukt über die gleichnamige Bahnstation. Mit dem Zug sind es nur drei Minuten bis zum Zentrum. Überquert man Daqiao Richtung Süden, erreicht man die belebte Zhonghua Road mit Geschäften, Banken, Supermärkten und Restaurants.

In Richtung Norden, kommt man zum Chimei Krankenhaus, wo ich bis jetzt noch nicht gewesen bin (Drei Mal auf Holz klopfen) und weitere Geschäfte die fürs leibliche und seelische Wohl sorgen. Auf der rechten Seite findet man Mietautoanbieter. Größere Supermärkte, wie Carefour, befinden sich ebenfalls in dieser Gegend. Außerdem findet man dort den Uninähesten McDonald’s, KFC und Starbucks.

Die Straße gegenüber des Nordeingangs bietet ebenfalls Restaurants, aber nicht so viele wie die Nantai Street. Allerdings gibt es dort tolle Vietnamesische Restaurants und den beeindruckenden Daoist Tempel.

Ich habe nur erzählt wo man etwas zum Essen und zum Trinken bekommt, aber wusstest du auch das ich hier an der STUST studiere? Der nächste Teil wird sich um meine Kurse und das Thema meiner Masterarbeit drehen.
