The Last Duolingo Story

The Lawyer is opening a long letter and starts to read:

“Dear loved ones, and those who came nonetheless
from various languages, math, music and chess.
In my here last will, I will eventually confess
how my demise is linked to your endless success.

I, Duo, the friendly owl which I never really was,
will not have died due to a natural cause.
I will now recount all suspects’ cases without a pause
and you decide who is the culprit facing the laws.

Let’s start of with Lily as suspect for this thriller,
as she has the indifferent face of a cold-hearted killer.
Her introverted persona could just be a performance filler,
as she would love to be all pupil’s mascot and pillar.

Eddy is a determined athlete, but at keeping streaks lazy.
My constant reminders could have driven him crazy.
He should have trained his brain because his memory is hazy
and with his strong hands accidents can happen, upsi daisy.

Bea is on the forefront to increase Duolingo’s diversity
and her ambition would make her a prime adversary.
She has the wits and smarts to excel at any university,
or coming up with a plan to end my humorous perversity.

Oscar is known for his composure to evaporate in a flash,
and when it comes to art or chess he is ready to clash.
You do not know what secrets he hides under his Mustache.
Would he have been able to throw my corpse into the trash?

Zari seems like a sweetheart, innocent and cute,
but take away the masquerade and she is quite the brute.
As ever-present restlessness takes in her anxiety root,
could waiting for another lesson be the reason to shoot?

Junior does not even hide his criminal mastermind,
exploiting his father and all the victims he can find.
His greed and cunning might have made him blind,
Did he coerce others to fulfill his vicious deed in kind?

Lucy is known to have been – or still be – a formidable spy.
Her intel would tell her the deadliest moment to try
and vanish before being spotted by any Police eye.
Is her name even Lucy, or is that another convenient lie?

Falstaff is not a teddy bear, but in fact a very wild beast.
Don’t let the scarf deceive you or be the one deceased.
Once his hunger leads to aggressiveness increased,
humans and owls alike are on the menu of his feast.

Lin might be the least suspicious for her idling of time,
but she watching day in and out nothing but true crime.
Maybe she idolized the bloody stories in their prime,
and after the killing is done, back on the couch she can climb.

Vikram is as good as they get, a truly gentle soul.
But the pent-up frustration turns his heart black as coal.
For every fake smile added up to the mental toll,
he could have vented by riddling the owl with another hole.

After hearing the dark depths of each of my “friends”
let us convict the one responsible to make amends.
The only truth of how my, Duo’s last story ends,
is uncovered by looking at one more character through a lens.

He is a volatile psychopath soaring through the skies.
He threatens with murder, when people do not take his advice.
He tried to blame all ill-deeds on his trusted allies.
He is me. And I am the reason for my untimely demise.

My threats had not been empty bluffs, my madness was unmatched
Neither streak extensions nor diamonds could keep me attached.
In the pressure of keeping you going my very own drive got snatched,
I am the end of my Last Story that started the moment I hatched.”
